Why Your Downlights Deserve More Than a Bulb Swap
Flickering LED downlights are rarely a dead globe. In most cases the fault is an incompatible dimmer switch, an undersized transformer still left over from halogen days, or a driver inside the fitting that's failing under heat load. Swapping the globe without addressing the underlying circuit often means the new fitting fails within months.
Older Sutherland Shire homes — particularly brick veneer and double-brick builds from the 1970s through to the 2000s — frequently have halogen downlights recessed into insulated ceilings. Halogens run hot enough to ignite insulation if the clearance gap is lost or the fittings aren't fire-rated. Converting to LED removes that heat source and eliminates a genuine fire risk, but only when the replacement fitting carries the correct IC-F (insulation contact, fire-rated) rating for your ceiling type.
LED technology has also matured significantly. Colour temperature now ranges from warm 2700K (close to the old halogen glow) through to a crisp 4000K daylight that suits kitchens and workspaces. Choosing the wrong colour temperature for a room is a common mistake — and one that's hard to fix cheaply after installation. Getting the layout, spacing, and beam angle right before installation means you avoid hot spots, dark corners, and the washed-out look of downlights placed too close to walls.
Australian Standard AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) governs how downlights must be wired and spaced, and many local councils within the Sutherland Shire LGA also require fire-rated fittings wherever insulation is present above the ceiling. An unlicensed installation voids your home insurance and can fail a pre-sale inspection.
What Happens When Exell Installs Your Downlights
Before any fittings go in, we assess your existing circuit load to confirm the board can handle the new layout without tripping. We check whether your current dimmers are LED-compatible — most older TRIAC dimmers are not — and identify any remaining halogen transformers that need to be removed. Then we plan the layout on-site, marking positions to achieve even lux distribution rather than guessing from the existing hole pattern.
- Circuit load check before any fittings are ordered or purchased
- Halogen transformer removal — not just bypassed
- IC-F rated fittings selected to match your ceiling insulation type
- Dimmer compatibility confirmed or upgraded as part of the job
- All work tested, certified, and documented with a certificate of compliance
