Power Point Installation

Power Point Installation Across the Sutherland Shire

From a single double GPO to a full room fit-out, Exell Electrical walks you through every step — assessment, cable routing, load calculation, and a compliant finish.

  • Correct load assessment before any cable is run
  • Concealed or surface-mounted wiring options explained upfront
  • All work tested and Certificate of Compliance issued
  • Serving Kirrawee, Cronulla, Miranda, Engadine and surrounding suburbs

How a Power Point Installation Actually Works

The job starts with a load assessment — we check how much capacity the existing circuit carries before deciding whether a new point can tap into it or needs a dedicated circuit back to the switchboard. Overloaded circuits are a common cause of nuisance tripping and, in older Sutherland Shire homes with original 1960s–80s wiring, a real fire risk.

Next comes cable routing. In a double-brick or clad weatherboard home — both common across suburbs like Engadine and Jannali — the routing options differ significantly. We plan the path to keep walls intact wherever possible: down from the roof cavity, up from the sub-floor, or surface-mounted in a matching conduit when concealing cable isn't practical. You know the plan before a single hole is made.

Installation uses 2.5 mm² TPS cable to AS/NZS 3000 (the Australian Wiring Rules). GPOs are fitted with correct back-boxes for the wall type — plasterboard, brick, or fibrous cement — and every outlet in a kitchen, bathroom, laundry or garage is protected by a residual current device (RCD) as required under current NSW regulations.

Finally, we test the circuit with a multifunction tester — insulation resistance, earth continuity, and polarity — before the power is restored. A Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) is issued, which you'll need for insurance purposes and any future property sale.

Signs You Need More Power Points

When Extension Leads Become a Permanent Fixture, That's the Signal

Extension leads and multi-boards are designed for temporary use. When they become a fixture behind the TV cabinet, under the home-office desk, or along the kitchen bench, the circuit load and the physical setup both become hazardous. Sutherland Shire homes built before the 1990s typically have far fewer GPOs per room than modern usage demands — a bedroom designed for a bedside lamp now powers phones, tablets, a laptop, and a smart speaker.

  • Daisy-chained power boards on a single outlet
  • Regularly tripping circuit breakers on one particular circuit
  • Outlets that feel warm or show scorch marks around the face-plate
  • No power point within 900 mm of a kitchen bench section (required for new installations)
  • Renovating or adding a home office, media room, or garage workshop
  • Outdoor entertaining area with no weatherproof GPO

Why choose us

Why Sutherland Shire Homeowners Choose Exell Electrical

Certificate of Compliance Issued Every Time

Every installation produces a CCEW lodged with NSW Fair Trading — required for insurance claims and property transactions.

RCD Protection Included Where Required

We apply current NSW regulations, not minimums — so kitchen, bathroom, and outdoor circuits get RCD protection as standard.

Accurate Time Estimates, Respected

Most single-point additions take 1–2 hours. We tell you what to expect before we start, not after we've opened the wall.

FAQ

Power Point Installation — Common Questions

It depends on the circuit's current load and the number of outlets already on it. AS/NZS 3000 limits how many points can share a circuit without breaching conductor capacity. We measure the existing load first — if there's headroom, tapping in is straightforward. If not, a sub-circuit or dedicated circuit is the correct path.
